Bookmobile Service & Supplementary Collections:

WMRLS Bookmobile

The Western Massachusetts Regional Library System (WMRLS) maintains collections in an effort to ensure that member libraries have access to materials that meet the needs of their users. These collections are available primarily through the public library bookmobile program.

Bookmobile Service to Public Libraries

The purpose of the WMRLS bookmobile program is to supplement the materials collections of small public libraries. This service is available to public libraries in communities of fewer than 25,000 residents. The bookmobile also provides direct public service in three small municipalities which do not have local public libraries.
General Guidelines for Bookmobile Service

This program is intended as a supplement to the collections of small public libraries; there is no attempt to provide specific titles, best sellers or reference materials that are likely to be needed as part of a library’s permanent collection. The supplemental collection is a general, popular collection.  The focus of the collection is:

  • genre fiction for adults (mysteries, westerns, romances, science fiction)
  • popular fiction and non-fiction for children, with an emphasis on picture books and early readers
  • large print books
  • audio books for adults and children
  • popular feature films on video for children and adults
Bookmobile Policies
  • Access to the bookmobile collection is limited to library staff members; public use is not allowed.
  • In towns where the local library is open fewer than ten hours each week, the number of items borrowed is severely limited.
  • The bookmobiles follow a fixed service schedule which provides for visits to each location every eleven weeks.
  • Libraries are responsible for billing their patrons for lost and damaged bookmobile items.
