EVENING LIBRARIAN (Part-Time), Berkshire Community College.
Description of Duties: Provides reference service and library instruction; prepares displays and user guides; helps develop and maintain collection and access to electronic resources; covers circulation desk as necessary; assists in closing the facility; and performs other library duties as assigned. Hours from 4 to 8 pm Mon. through Thursday while classes are in session, including summer sessions; with possibility of additional Saturday hours in the future. Position starts May 27, 2008.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
MLS or MLIS degree required; experience in library public services preferred. Must have appropriate knowledge of electronic and traditional library systems and resources. Requires excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; good computer skills. Working knowledge of Powerpoint preferred. Must be accurate, flexible, and dependable.

SALARY: $21.78/hr with no benefits.

Five Colleges, Incorporated is a nonprofit educational consortium established in 1965 to promote the broad educational and cultural objectives of its member institutions, Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Hampshire College. Each of the libraries has distinctive collections, most of which are broadly accessible for use by students and faculty. Extensive and long-standing cooperation among the libraries also gives researchers access to their combined strength, which currently totals some eight million volumes.

The Five Colleges seek candidates for the position of Five Colleges Libraries, Aleph Manager. Reporting to the Five Colleges Librarians Council through the Director of Libraries, UMass Amherst, this position leads the management and ongoing utilization of the Five Colleges Libraries Aleph integrated library system. Working with the Aleph Management Committee (with representatives from each of the five libraries), Five Colleges functional committees, and the technical support staff of UMass Amherst Libraries, the Manager coordinates communication and efforts among the libraries and within the shared Aleph implementation including maintaining common configuration tables, troubleshooting problem reports, writing custom reports, coordinating software patches and upgrades, and providing training and documentation to library staff. This position serves as the information conduit between vendors and the Five Colleges Libraries, including possible enhancements, special ILS-related projects, and auxiliary services. The incumbent is expected to maintain a broad and detailed mastery of Aleph and other core applications while contributing to and advancing the collaborative vision of the Five Colleges Libraries.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association-accredited library and information studies program.

2. Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an academic, research, or special library.

3. Demonstrated understanding of MARC, Unicode and other standards for representation of library information in electronic form such as METS, MODS, EAD, etc.

4. Demonstrated experience with Oracle SQL, UNIX/Linux, HTML, XML, JavaScript, and PERL.

5. Experience with Aleph or other Oracle and Unix-based integrated library systems preferred.

6. Demonstrated experience managing library systems.

7. Demonstrated experience with productivity software and library software including OCLC.

8. Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and stay current with technical developments.

9. Thorough understanding of library operations.

10. Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with both library and vendor staff.

11. Ability to organize work, develop effective work processes, assess work priorities, and work independently.

12. Excellent analytical, trouble-shooting and problem solving skills related to technical environment.

13. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster a collegial work environment that encourages change and innovation; and the ability to interact effectively and work productively, collegially, cooperatively, and collaboratively with a variety of individuals and groups in a complex and rapidly changing environment.

Cataloging/ Government Documents Assistant, Williams College Libraries, Catalog Department. The Williams College Library began participating in the government document depository program in 1858. The historical depth of the documents collection is one of its greatest strengths and complexity of its management. The position of Government Documents Assistant requires an individual who has excellent skill in organizing a multi-faceted workflow.
A full-time (37.5 hours per week) year round position is available reporting to the Head of Cataloging. The Assistant's primary responsibilities include managing the acquisition and processing of government documents received by the library through the Federal Depository Library Program, oversight of the retrospective conversion of older materials in the government documents collection, cataloging of other new receipts, and providing accurate access to bibliographic records in the library's online catalog. Another key function is maintaining the accuracy of the library catalog through withdrawal projects and regular record maintenance.
Candidates should have at least two years of experience working in a library or educational environment. Librarian. American Institute for Economic Research (AIER), founded in 1933, is a non-political, nonprofit organization engaged in scientific economic research. AIER s E.C. Harwood Library was established in 1962 to house the Institute s holdings and support ongoing research initiatives. The library is undergoing a year-long redevelopment of resources, including streamlining the book and serial collections, upgrading electronic capabilities and digitizing 75 years of AIER research. There is still significant work required to complete this project.

Primary responsibilities: AIER's Librarian will manage the day-to-day operations of the E.C. Harwood Library and provide research and other information services to staff, members, visiting scholars and researchers, and summer fellowship program faculty and students. AIER seeks a candidate who will carry the newly constituted library into the future and who will explore new ways to promote the success of the Institute through increased access to information on the web, other online sites, databases and feeds, as well as traditional sources of information in the field of economics. The Librarian reports to AIER s Director of Operations and Development.

Required work skills: The ideal candidate will have experience with all aspects of managing a one-person research library, familiarity with online databases, web resources in economics and statistics as well as the industry and its organizations, and knowledge of InMagic s GENIE or comparable collection management systems. This position requires excellent organizational, management, marketing and communications skills. The Librarian must be proactive in dealing with staff and have a proven ability to work within time-constraints and adhere to deadlines. The ideal candidate will be self-directed, motivated, and pay close attention to detail.

Required education and experience: An MLS degree is required, with at least five years experience working on all phases of library operations in a business, non-profit or consulting firm environment.

The Personnel Issues Committee of the Massachusetts Library Association is advising an adjustment of the Minimum Salary recommendation for the year 2004. The new recommended entry-level salary for MLS positions will be $47,957
  • Education Requirements: The regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners [605 CMR 4.01 (4)] mandate four years of college for the public library director in communities with a population under 10,000 and ALA accredited MLS required for all library directors in communities with a population of 10,000 and over.
