Reference Librarian (P.T.): Springfield (MA) City Library and its branches.
SUMMARY: This is responsible administrative and public outreach work for providing reference and resource information and material to the general public for the City of Springfield's Library Department. Work involves responsibility for assisting patrons to find and use library materials or provide referral to other sources, and other similar duties pertaining to the Information Services department. Work is performed in accordance with accepted practices and procedures in the field of library sciences related to reference and resource material with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent professional judgment under the general direction of the Head of Information Services who reviews work through observation, reports and conferences. Supervision may be exercised over other employees of a lesser grade. RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:
Providing reference and instructional services to the general public, branches and regional libraries. Monitoring performance of the periodicals collection; assisting the Internet Services Librarian in Web maintenance; overseeing the production of bibliographic aids; and performing similar duties affecting system wide operations as required. Participating in the common work of the department including outreach, books by mail, formal instruction, collection development, web development and maintenance, compilation of bibliographies and other reader advisory products, displays, etc. Planning, scheduling and implementing bibliographic instruction programs for students, special interest groups or the general public in the use of library services and collections; participating in system wide staff training program.
Initiating and engaging in special projects that analyze, design and develop special services for various diverse audiences; participating individually or in work teams to make recommendations for new initiatives or changes in service as they relate to the overall operation of the reference desks. Keeping abreast of developments and technological advances in the library field, current events, popular reading interests, and other issues necessary to maintaining awareness of public information needs; conducting informal training of other personnel to increase awareness of methods and practices. Performing routine tasks such a taking payments for microform copies, counting daily cash receipts, keeping statistics, re-filing and re-shelving ready-reference materials. Performing other similar duties as responsibility and necessity dictate or requested by supervisor. SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED include, but are not limited to: Considerable knowledge of an advanced and specialized discipline involving theoretical knowledge within the field of library science. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Graduation from a four-year college or university and an ALA accredited Master's Degree in Library Science.

Founded in 1970, the Consortium supports resource sharing and enhancement of services to users through programs in cooperative collecting, access to electronic resources and physical collections, and enhanced interlibrary loan and document delivery. Position Summary: Under the direction of the BLC Board of Directors and in conjunction with the Board’s Management Council, the Executive Director of the Boston Library Consortium is responsible for managing the programs and services of the Consortium.
